#### A Difficult Decision

In a candid interview, 18-year-old Oliver shares his journey of detransitioning after a year of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the struggles he faced during the process. Raising awareness of the complexity of gender identity, this teenager’s story shows the importance of self-discovery and embracing happiness.

#### Choosing to Detransition

Oliver began his transition from female to male at the age of 16, a decision that cost him friendships and led to obstacles in his quest to find support. A year after being on HRT, Oliver experienced an epiphany regarding his identity and opted to detransition.

“Coming to this decision wasn’t easy,” he shares. “Even though I had support from my family and a few close friends, I felt like I was letting the transgender community down.”

#### The Road to Acceptance

Realizing that not everyone would understand his decision, Oliver relied on his network of family and friends and sought professional help to navigate the emotional and physical aspects of detransitioning. Acquiring accurate information and the appropriate medical care proved to be difficult initially, but he persisted, driven by the desire to feel true to himself.

“It was hard to find stories like mine and professionals who understood my struggles, which raised concerns about the road ahead,” he said. “Eventually, I was able to find a supportive medical professional who helped me understand the process better and made me feel understood.”

#### Inspiring Others to Prioritize Personal Happiness

Oliver now uses his social media platform to document his detransition journey and encourage others facing similar identity struggles to prioritize their well-being. He advocates for the need to prioritize self-discovery and evidence-based guidance to make well-informed decisions.

“Whether you are transitioning or detransitioning, one thing I’ve learned is that it’s important to do what makes you happy,” he says. “Life is too short to be in constant conflict with yourself, and knowing what makes you happy should always come first.”

#### Raising Awareness in a Time of Change

As transgender visibility continues to grow, and the conversation around gender identity evolves, Oliver’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding, acceptance, and individual happiness. He believes that sharing his story will provide a much-needed perspective on the complexity of gender identity beyond transitioning.

“I want to help break the stigma around detransitioning,” he says. “I want people to know that it’s okay to detransition, and it’s equally as important and valid as those choosing to transition.”
